Centre PresidentWelcome to all athletes and families - new and returning - to the 47th season of Little Athletics Chelsea. We have another exciting season planned with loads of fun events and I wish all athletes well.

If you are new to little athletics, I trust that you will enjoy your ‘running, throwing and jumping’ and I look forward to seeing you return for many seasons to come.

As always, our focus at Chelsea remains on ‘family, fun and fitness’.

There are no qualifying standards and we encourage all our athletes to simply enjoy their sport and do their best.

At Chelsea, I’d like to think that we are a place ‘where friends meet’, and so I invite all parents and caregivers to come along, say g’day and have an involvement, mindful that our centre is a totally voluntary organisation that can only function with the assistance of people like yourself.

Each week we rely on volunteers to fulfil a range of duties whether it be measuring, raking, timing, helping at the bbq or canteen, being an age group co-ordinator or a committee member.

What makes a great centre is a great team of volunteers and I thank those wonderful parents who help out each week.

This season there will be a duty roster with plenty of opportunities for all parents to get involved and lend a hand - as is the commitment when you sign-up for little aths - and in particular we hope to see more faces at set-ups, pack-ups and at working bees.

Newly registered and returning families are also invited to one of our information sessions before the season starts to meet other members and find out more about the season ahead.

We are also on the lookout for starters and officials and there will be some terrific training courses on offer as well as coaching for athletes.

Keep an eye on our website, mobile app and Facebook site for updates, or please feel free to see me or a committee member. Our on-line handbook has plenty of information and all relevant contacts, and we are always open to new ideas.

Those of us on the Centre Committee have been busy planning and with everybody’s help we can continue to make our fantastic centre even better, while continuing to build on our recent successes, which have included:

  • consistent numbers of Chelsea athletes attending other centre Open Days and Cross Country events plus Regional and State competitions;

  • representation at the Victorian Track & Field Championships. Well done to all our athletes, in particular to James Hendricks who returned with a bronze in the U/14 Boys 300m hurdles, and Dinal Gamage, who placed 5th in the U/9 Boys shot put; and

  • successful testing of our electronic barcoding timing system which will be introduced this season

We are also most grateful for the support of all our sponsors this season, and to them, I say a very big thank-you. Remember to support them whenever you can.

Let’s also remember the importance of safety in the arena and ensure that as athletes we complete our warm-ups and stretches correctly.

It promises to be another great season of athletics and I look forward to seeing you at the track - ‘where friends meet’.
